What this event is about:Hands Across the City – August 7, 2010 – is a one-day service and fellowship event to beautify Grand Rapids city parks and to build a new KaBOOM! playground at Garfield Park.
Lending our hands to the city parks includes raking, hauling mulch, painting and general clean-up tasks; Garfield Park KaBOOM! project volunteers will construct the new playground from the ground up in one day! Following the morning’s work, we’ll gather at noon for a hearty free lunch and an afternoon of live music at Garfield Park. On just one morning, in three short hours, we can rethink church, impact our community, and make a positive difference in the world God loves. What to prepare for:Our partners from Friends of GR Parks, the City of GR, Garfield Park Neighborhood Association and KaBOOM! will provide service projects and instructions for sites.
All hands must register by going to the “Volunteer” tab. Registration is required; it reserves your spot at your preferred work site and gets you the free red T-shirt you’ll need to be wearing to receive the hearty free lunch! (Shirts will be distributed by team leaders at sites the morning of the event.) Water and light refreshments guaranteed at Garfield Park only. You must provide your own sunscreen, bug spray, hats or protective clothing, closed-toed shoes and anything else to be comfortable outside. Some sites may have carpooling possibilities; if yours doesn’t, consider organizing one! All hands are responsible for their own transportation. A team leader will contact you prior to August 7 to answer questions and share specific instructions related to your worksite. (Please be open to working at an alternative site as determined by greatest need of the parks.) This event is specifically geared to those 18 and older. All children under 18 must be accompanied by an adult, and most projects will not be appropriate for very young children. The KaBOOM! project at Garfield Park, however, will include activities for children of KaBOOM! volunteers only. Participating churches are encouraged to provide childcare for their volunteers. Youth group leaders should contact us before registering. Thank you for doing your part to make a difference in the world God loves! We hope your hands and hearts enjoy themselves on August 7! |
